solas dragon age is like what if there was a man who kept running into the trolley problem over and over again except the stakes are thousands of lives no matter what choice is made. and instead of focusing on the lives saved through action, he and everyone else instead decide to focus on the people he actively killed through making his choices and villainize him for it until he and everyone else sees only that narrative.
and then rook dragon age is like if someone else was presented with the trolley problem and you think they're going to learn the same lessons and gain the same pains and regret as the first man except instead they a) end up putting the blame on solas for their decision to switch trolley tracks at the beginning and then after that b) god descends from heaven and tells them "it's ok you're perfect let's make this issue easy for you so there's a clear right answer" and uses magic to teleport away the people on one path of the trolley so they don't have to make any meaningful sacrifice.
and then rook turns to solas and goes "see you're such a stupid bad guy, i was in the same situation as you and i made Good Choices because i'm a Good Guy" and in the end solas and everyone else are basically like "yeah that's true time for solas to give up his silly little plans that had no merit and let's not even bother seeing if we can address the problems he was trying to fix in different ways" and rook gets to end the game pretending like they faced the same difficult decisions as solas but rose above when he couldn't.

about illario working with the venatori, we can't forget that elgar'nan gifted him blood magic, so I do think that he somewhat influenced him and that's why he's so much more vindictive and jealous in comparison to tevinter nights. I don't mean that he's being mind controlled, but it's a bit like cyrian, a god just amplifying those negative emotions in you and promising power and glory can push a person to that edge and to make stupid af decisions.
im also not forgetting that zara line in inner demons where she talks about an envy demon. like. why an envy demon in specific...there's THINGS between zara and illario that were not shown
Tumblr media
no literally if you get me talking about illario + envy + the possibility of getting him possessed, you will have me here for fucking ever. a non mage doing blood magic (any magic at all) is really weird and interesting to me and i don’t remember an example of this happening before (feel free to correct me tho lol. i’m discounting possessions and dwarves)
i had started wildly theorising after bloodbath that he had been possessed and he was tapping into the fade using an envy demon. especially like you said, zara mentions it, AND because i swear there’s a codex in the ossuary where it mentions an envy demon whereas spite is obviously determination, right? so i thought it was a breadcrumb trail to a big “illario is being influenced and doesn’t even know” reveal— same as you anon like great minds am i right— but i’m not sure there is actually any evidence of that lol. like maybe if you squint but i do believe it was explained away by “oh yeah, and elgarnan let him do special blood magic”
it does also make sense to me that illario can only control lucanis, due to being part of the same family. a bloodline thing, and it is very poetic to me that their shared family connection in caterina is what allows him to control lucanis, even for a moment lol. spite being the extra magical boost that lucanis needs to block that out ALSO makes sense to me so i’m not too fussed abt these details lol🤔
the envyllario in my heart also gets spectral weapons for himself. lucanis gets wings, illario gets talons, PLUS green-purple are complementary colors so it would have been really fun to see them clash with their spirit/demon-powers. the talon thing is also a kind of reflection of his end-goal desire, how envy demons already have those freaky hands, and it manifests as claws and is a much more aggressive, strength-augmenting manifestation (as opposed to manoeuvrability and speed-augmenting that spite’s wings give lucanis.) anyways that's what the diagram above is supposed to be (this is extremely hot to me)

Spite wasn't Lucanis's biggest issue in VG and I sort of get annoyed when people are like "Spite should have been a bigger problem!!!" Because yeah maybe before weisshaupt they should have had the two of them more earnestly disagreeing and that making it harder for Lucanis to physically be able to do his job but he spells it out for us multiple times in the Ossuary and afterwards: Spite doesn't want to be there. None of the spirits in the ossuary did. They didnt want to cross the veil spite is literally just as lost and hurt and confused as Lucanis the only reason they survived and didnt become one of those undead we have to kill is because of Lucanis's empathy and being able to put himself in Spite's shoes and see that. I don't think Spite would then actively try and sabotage the only person in the world who's been relatively kind to him he just wants Lucanis to let him be free like he promised. Like he gets frustrated and annoyed but its because Lucanis doesn't listen because listening means confronting all the other shit going on in his head and that is what he's afraid of. Not Spite. I think once he's out of the Ossuary he uses Spite as a scapegoat for all his other trauma like oh I have a demon in me so I don't have time to think about the fact that my cousin betrayed me or I was tortured or my grandmother is an abusive piece of shit SPITE IS NOT LUCANIS'S MAIN ISSUE

I'm a hopeless Solas lover and so I decided to embroider the final epilogue slide between solas and a romanced inquisitor~ I'm really happy with how it came out!!!

How are we killing off everyone's family members except Lucanis'? Seriously, Shathann has to die but fucking Caterina gets to live? Shathann is 'redeemed' for apparently being a bad mother but Caterina Dellamorte, Abuser Extraordinaire, gets to happily go into semi-retirement? Absolute bullshit!

It’s funny to me to imagine that the team were so stressed trying to locate Rook in the fade that they forgot to tell Viago about the whole situation and Rook is sat a couple of hours after he gets back and just goes “man I can’t imagine how Viago must be feeling”
Cue the whole team freezing and turning to Rook in simultaneous horror while Rook stares back like “what??.”
He’s then completely baffled that they forgot to tell his dad that he’d gone missing.

it is such a Non Issue in like. the grand scheme of things, but there keep being these little word choices in vg that just. dont fit to me?
like davrin saying "the dalish gave the wardens an eluvian" when it should be "a dalish clan", since the dalish arent one unified entity?
or saying isseya blighted the griffins, which is. not true!! she joined them, something that had never successfully been done before, and its a pretty big difference lore wise???
the same difference between someone who gets infected by the taint blight, and someone who undergoes the joining. one becomes a ghoul or dies, the other becomes a grey warden (which is also why the griffins she joined fought longer and harder, because they gained the same benefits as the wardens)
i know this is such a petty little pedantic problem. i just wanted to complain real quick

"What have they done to you,
Old friend."
Trapped in the fade, Solas comes face to face with the remnant of his spirit.
The Dread Wolf was his wisdom, mirror to his pride. In the wake of the wrathful Evanuris, it too, has succumbed to their taint.
Or, where I'm making wild plot speculations surrounding Solas trapped in the fade. while turning my brainrot into art pieces and gifs. I'M PACING MY ENCLOSURE. Looking for crumbs and scrabs of Veilguard. Please Bioware I'm begging, feed me. 😭

Smear of Paint, you say? *stares harder*
THE PROSPECT THAT OUR HEART'S DESIRE AND OUR TRUEST NEED COULD DIFFER--OR ARE EVEN AT ODDS--IS HARD TO CONTEMPLATE, you say? *stares so hard my eyes fall out*
This second playthrough (for observations, not just desperately speeding to the end) is already taking me out.

in his and davrin's banters, lucanis exhibits a certain little shit energy I don't think we see him have with anyone else other than illario and honestly I am living for this
#dragon age#dragon age: the veilguard#dragon age: the veilguard spoilers#dragon age spoilers#lucanis dellamorte#davrin#also that's really interesting. with illario it's clearly not ever meant to wound but it serves a similar function of 'hey fuck off'#they have that friendly insult game going that veils some real resentments and conflicts that perhaps. should have been dealt with#considering that you could hardly find two people less alike in fundamental character than davrin and illario... fascinating#I suppose both of them push past lines of comfort and don't really let up at subtler signals to back off#(illario to needle and davrin mostly because he's that straightforward I think haha)#but the sheer viciousness with which lucanis responds makes me think there could mayhaps be some resentment with that dynamic#that he won't let out with illario himself b/c he has so few interpersonal relationships and wouldn't risk disrupting one#even when illario is getting up to some Shit even outside of the whole betrayal thing#and davrin is sooo uninterested in doing anything but call 'em as he sees 'em and it's glorious haha#it also means that I think lucanis is more honest in those banters than he is with anyone else I've seen#including the fact that he's mad and that the ossuary really did suck that bad actually#with bellara he's like 'don't worry about me I'm fine *thousand yard stare*' and with davrin he goes 'yeah I'm haunted forever by it.#does that satisfy your curiosity' lmao. and then they're just trading barely veiled death threats for a while#davrin is confrontational but he's also a safe person to be angry with b/c I think at the end of the day he is also fair#many thoughts. all the time. all veilguard up in my neurons 24/7

People rightfully talk about how devastating romantic solavellan is, but I think platonic solavellan can also be extremely devastating.
Like, my main Inquisitor was a Dalish rogue. She had no experience of magic, or the Fade, or anything like that before accidentally stumbling into the whole Corypheus ritual thing. Solas saved her life. He was by her side when she was confused and scared and trying to figure out what the hell had happened to her while all these humans were accusing her of a terrible crime she didn't commit. He helped her learn how to use the mark to seal the rifts; helped her understand what her new abilities were and that they were needed. When the humans began to call her the herald of a divine figure she didn't worship, Solas was the one person she could turn to when it all started to get a bit much (my Inquisitor was very much a Life of Brian-esque "I'm not the Herald of Andraste!" type). The conversation they have in the snow after everyone gathers together to sing "The Dawn Will Come" is such an important moment. Two elves, in the midst of a struggle fundamentally elven but that human beliefs had managed to co-opt.
Solas was her mentor. Her friend. Someone who opened her eyes to the vastness of the world; who complicated things she thought she understood. And she listened to him with an open mind and heart in turn. She was living proof that his unpleasant encounters with the Dalish were not universal. She had accepted her mortality, her lack of magic, because she knew no other way to be, and it probably broke his heart that he knew that HE was the one who had taken it from her. idk I'm just obsessed with all the dialogue that implies that the Inquisitor, through befriending Solas, changed a lot of his opinions about the modern world (modern elves especially), but that it wasn't enough to make him accept the world as it was in the end
idk man. platonic solavellan. really looking forward to seeing how it all plays out in veilguard.
